Heat, noise & safety signs: buyer questions
Warm chargers, buzzing, interference and the signs that mean a charger should be taken out of use.
-
Is it safe to leave a power bank charging overnight?
A good, certified power bank in good condition has protection circuits that stop charging when it is full, so overnight charging is generally considered acceptable.
-
Why does an AM radio or Wi-Fi speaker crackle near a charger?
Chargers switch power at high speed and can produce electrical noise that AM radio picks up.
-
Is it OK to leave a charger plugged into the wall all the time?
For a good, certified charger in good condition, it is generally fine.
-
What are the warning signs that a charger or cable should be thrown away?
Throw it away if you see exposed wires, cracks, melted or discoloured plastic, bent or loose plug blades, burn marks, a burning smell, sparks, a buzzing sound with heat, or if you ever feel a tingle or shock.
-
What does a charger’s LED flashing red or green mean, and who decides?
There is no universal code.
-
Why does a charger trip an RCD or GFCI socket?
A GFCI trips when it sees a small current leaking to ground.
-
Why does a charger make a humming sound only at a low load?
A faint hum at light load is common and usually not a fault.
-
Why does a 3-in-1 stand feel warm in the stand column?
Often yes.
-
What should I do if a phone or power bank battery looks swollen?
Stop using and charging it straight away.
-
Why does my phone get hot while charging and playing a game?
Two heat sources add together: the game makes the processor and screen work hard, and charging makes the battery and charging circuit warm.
-
Is it normal for a phone to get warm while fast charging?
A phone feeling warm while it charges quickly is normal.
-
Why does a charger case look discoloured or warped near one corner?
Discolouration or warping in one spot means that area has been getting too hot, often because a component inside is running hot, the charger has been covered or overloaded or a part has failed.
-
Why does a charger smell hot or burnt when it first runs under load?
A faint odour during the first hour or so can come from residues on new parts warming up for the first time, and usually fades.
-
Why does a charger shut down and restart repeatedly?
A charger that cycles on and off is often protecting itself.
-
Do chargers use electricity when nothing is plugged in?
Yes, but very little.
-
Why does a spark appear when a charger is inserted into a socket?
A brief, small spark at the moment of plugging in is often normal.
-
Why does one side of a charger get hotter than the other?
Usually it is normal.
-
Is it safe to cover a charging phone with a blanket or pillow?
It is best not to.
-
Why does a charger get hotter in a wall socket behind furniture?
Yes, it is a real effect.
-
Why do we hear a click or crackle when a charger is plugged in?
A single faint click or small spark at the moment of plugging in can be normal, because the charger's capacitors draw a burst of current when they meet live mains.
-
Why does my phone charger get hot, and when is it a problem?
A charger warming up under load is normal. Very hot, smelling, discoloured, buzzing loudly or physically damaged is not, and the right response is to stop using it.
-
Why does a speaker charger crackle when charging?
Crackling during wireless charging can come from interference between the charging circuit and the audio path, a weak adapter, Bluetooth congestion or a fault. Try another adapter and socket, test audio with charging off, and report persistent crackle.
-
Why does a GaN charger whine or buzz?
A faint high-pitched whine under certain loads can come from components vibrating at switching frequencies, known as coil whine. It's often harmless. Loud buzzing, crackling, or noise with heat or smell is not normal; stop using the charger.
-
Why does a charger make a phone touchscreen jumpy?
Electrical noise from a charger, cable or ungrounded setup can disturb capacitive touchscreens, causing ghost touches or erratic response while charging. Try a different charger, cable or socket; persistent issues with one charger point to a poor-quality or faulty unit.
-
Why does a charger trip the hotel room breaker?
A single phone or laptop charger draws little power, so a tripped breaker usually points to a fault in the charger, a damaged plug or adapter, moisture, or a circuit that is already overloaded. Stop using the charger until it's checked.
-
Why does a magnetic power bank get hot?
Wireless charging loses some energy as heat in both the power bank and phone, and the power bank's own battery heats while discharging or charging. Some warmth is normal; strong heat, swelling or smell is not.
-
Why does a wireless charger interfere with a bedside radio or speaker?
Wireless chargers and their power adapters create electromagnetic fields and switching noise. Radios, especially AM, and some speakers can pick this up. Moving devices apart, using a different adapter or socket usually helps; persistent strong interference should be reported.
-
Why does a charger feel warm when nothing is connected?
A slight warmth can be normal, especially for models with a display, or after recent use. Real heat with no load, a smell or a buzz is not normal; stop using the unit.
