What a travel GaN adapter is
A travel GaN adapter is a wall charger whose plug system is designed for more than one region. Rather than a passive plug converter, it contains a full GaN power stage, so it charges the device as well as adapting the socket. One body plus interchangeable EU, UK, US and AUS heads typically replaces three or four chargers in a suitcase.
Two ways to build it
Interchangeable heads slide onto the same body and are stored in a pouch, which keeps the charger small and lets you vary the plug mix per market without a second SKU. A multi-plug body carries the pins inside a single housing with a slider, which is faster to use but slightly larger. Which one is right depends on whether the product is sold as a kit or as a single unit.
Choosing the wattage
A 40W GaN travel adapter covers phones, tablets, earbuds and power banks — the devices that make up most of a travel kit. A 65W version adds thin-and-light laptops and handheld consoles. Above that, travellers usually prefer a separate desktop-grade charger and accept the extra weight.
Who buys them
Airline and hotel comfort kits, duty-free and airport retail, travel accessory brands, corporate and incentive gifts, and e-commerce sellers who want a single SKU they can ship worldwide. Hotel programmes usually ask for a robust body and a discreet finish; duty-free asks for retail packaging and multi-language manuals.
Certification by region
CE and RoHS for the EU and UK, FCC for the United States, and the regional equivalents for the other markets you distribute into. Because the plug heads are mechanical parts, they are tested together with the body, and the reports cover the complete configuration you ship.
Mechanical details that decide repeat orders
Travel products are judged on details that never appear on a data sheet. The plug heads have to click in positively and stay in when a bag is packed around them; the pins have to survive being bent back into shape; the body has to take a drop onto a hard floor; and the pouch has to hold the spare heads without rattling. Before a programme is signed off, we recommend a sample that travels with you for a week — that is the fastest test of whether the mechanism belongs in a hotel kit or on a duty-free shelf.
