Why does a docking station reboot when the charger is plugged in?
A reboot at the moment of plugging in usually means the power supply is not able to carry the load, or the dock and charger renegotiate power and briefly drop the connection.

Every time I plug the power adapter into my docking station, the dock or the connected laptop restarts. What causes this?
Short answer: A reboot at the moment of plugging in usually means the power supply is not able to carry the load, or the dock and charger renegotiate power and briefly drop the connection. Common causes are an underrated charger, a poor cable, a loose connector, a firmware bug or a power source that dips. Test with a rated adapter and cable, update the firmware and plug in in the right order.
What happens at plug-in
When power connects, the dock, the charger and often the laptop talk to each other to agree on voltage and current. During this process, power can briefly drop, and the dock or laptop may reset if it sees an unexpected change.
Common causes
- Underrated adapter. The dock plus the devices connected to it need more power than the adapter provides.
- Poor cable or loose connector. The contact makes and breaks at plug-in.
- Renegotiation. The dock and charger switch power levels and the link drops.
- Firmware bugs. An older version mishandles the change.
- Power dips. A shared circuit or a long extension lead with other loads.
- Too many devices on the dock. Monitors, drives and phones draw power at the same time.
- Faulty dock or adapter. A failing part shows up under load.
How to test
- Check the adapter’s rating against the dock’s required power.
- Try a different adapter and cable that are rated for the load.
- Plug the adapter into the dock before connecting other devices.
- Disconnect other devices and add them one by one.
- Plug into a different wall socket without extension leads.
- Update the firmware of the dock and laptop.
Fixes
- Use the adapter supplied by the dock’s maker or a rated equivalent.
- Replace loose or damaged connectors.
- Reduce the load, or use a dock with more power.
- Ask the maker about known issues and updates.
Safety
If the dock or adapter is hot, smells or sparks, unplug it and stop using it.
Quick summary
Match the adapter to the load, use a good cable, update firmware and add devices one at a time.
Log the conditions
Write down which devices were connected, which adapter was used and what happened each time. Patterns, such as a reboot only with the monitor connected, point to a power budget problem. Share the log with the dock’s maker, since it speeds up a fix or a firmware update and avoids repeated questions.
