Why is my phone not charging, and what can I fix myself?
Most phones that will not charge have a dirty port, a damaged cable or a wrong adapter. A short, ordered check finds the cause in minutes.

A customer writes that the phone shows nothing when plugged in. They ask whether the charger is dead or the phone is broken. Our support team wants a repeatable order of checks that avoids unnecessary returns.
Short answer: Change one thing at a time: a different outlet, then a different cable and adapter, then clean the charging port, then restart the phone. If a known-good cable and adapter still do nothing after about an hour, the phone needs service.
Step 1: rule out the outlet and the adapter
Apple’s troubleshooting page starts by suggesting a different power source, such as a wall outlet, a computer or a power accessory, and a firm connection at every point between cable, adapter and outlet. A loose plug head or a switched-off socket is a common cause.
Step 2: check the cable and adapter for damage
Look for breakage, bent pins or a loose connector. Apple says not to use damaged accessories. If you can, try a cable and adapter you know work on another device.
Step 3: clean the charging port
Lint packs into phone charging ports over time, especially after months in a pocket. Apple’s guidance includes removing debris from the port and pushing the cable in firmly. Use a dry, soft brush or a wooden or plastic pick, never metal, and see our dedicated post for the safe method.
Step 4: restart, then give it time
Restart the phone. If the battery is fully drained, the screen may stay dark for a while. Apple suggests letting the device charge for half an hour, trying a forced restart if it still will not start, and charging for another half hour.
Step 5: check for liquid
If there may be liquid in the port, do not plug a cable in. Apple warns about this in its charging instructions. Let the phone dry and follow the phone maker’s advice.
When it is not a quick fix
If the phone still does nothing with a known-good cable, a known-good adapter and a clean port, the cause is likely inside the phone, such as the port hardware or the battery. Contact the phone maker or an authorised repairer. Do not open the phone or force a connector.
Wireless chargers
If the phone does not charge on a wireless pad, check that the pad has power, the phone is centred, and the case is not thick or metal. Try a cable to confirm the phone itself charges.
