How do we use a retractable-cable charger without wearing the cable?
Pull only what you need, keep the cable straight from the outlet, guide it back, avoid sharp bends near the device, and don't use the cable to hold or swing the charger. These habits extend the life of both cable and mechanism.

Our retractable-cable charger is convenient, but we want to tell customers how to use it so the cable lasts. What habits matter most?
Short answer: Pull the cable out straight in line with the outlet, only as far as needed. Guide it back with your hand instead of letting it snap in. Avoid sharp bends at the connector and the outlet, and don’t let the charger hang from the cable. On desks, position the charger so the cable runs straight to the device. These habits reduce wear on both the cable and the retraction mechanism.
Pulling
Pull steadily and in line with the cable outlet. Pulling at an angle rubs the cable against the outlet edge and wears the jacket. Pull only the length needed; extending fully every time stresses the reel’s end stop.
Retracting
Hold the connector and guide it back. If the mechanism retracts quickly on its own, the connector can hit the outlet or a hand. Controlled retraction protects both.
Bend points
The places where cables fail most are next to connectors and at the outlet. Avoid using the phone with the cable bent sharply at the connector, such as when lying in bed. Position the charger so the cable runs straight.
Don’t hang the charger
Don’t let the charger dangle from the cable or use the cable to pull the charger out of a socket. That stresses internal joints.
Desk use
Place the charger so the cable reaches the device without tension. Leave a little slack. If the cable is always under tension, the reel and cable wear faster.
Travel
Retract fully before packing. Avoid pressing heavy items against the outlet in a bag.
Cleaning
Unplug the charger. Wipe the cable with a dry cloth while extended, then guide it back. Dirt on the cable can wear the reel.
Sharing in offices
In shared spaces, retractable cables get pulled by many hands and at awkward angles. A short note next to the charger asking users to guide the cable back helps, and regular checks catch wear early.
Signs of wear
- Fraying or kinks near the connector or outlet.
- Charging cutting in and out when the cable moves.
- Slow or incomplete retraction.
Stop using a charger with a damaged cable; the cable is built in and can’t be replaced by users.
What to tell customers
“Pull straight, guide it back, and keep the cable free of sharp bends. Your cable will last much longer.”
