Charger Production Lead Time: What Actually Drives the Calendar

A brand planned around a thirty-day production lead time and discovered that the magnetic components carried a forty-five day lead of their own. The production time had been quoted correctly; the calendar had been built from the wrong number, and the goods left five weeks after the date they were promised to the channel.

Production lead time: the five components of the calendar

Component lead time, the production slot, the test and aging step, the packaging print, and inspection, documents and freight.

The five are sequential in the order above unless something is deliberately run in parallel, and the total is the sum rather than the longest. A quotation that states one lead time figure has either combined them or omitted one, which is why asking for the five separately is the first step in planning.

The components also differ in who controls them: two belong to the supply chain, two to the factory, and one to the buyer’s own approval and booking decisions.

Component 1: component lead time

The clock that starts before production does.

Magnetic components, specific switching devices and connector parts often carry lead times longer than the assembly itself, and they may be quoted in weeks from order rather than from stock. Where the platform is in production, the factory usually holds these parts and the component lead time is effectively zero; where a part is ordered against the order, it becomes the first item on the calendar and it cannot be compressed by asking the line to work faster.

Component 2: the production slot

A queue, measured in dates rather than in days.

The slot is the point at which the order enters the line, and it depends on what else is booked. A factory with capacity next week and a factory with capacity next month can both quote a ten-day assembly time and produce very different delivery dates. This is the component that a capacity answer refers to, and the one worth confirming in writing with the date it was given.

Component 3: the test and aging step

A defined duration that scales with the plan, not with the volume alone.

Functional testing runs at line rate, while aging occupies a rack for the full duration of the burn-in. That means the aging component is a function of rack capacity and duration rather than of unit count: a batch that fits the rack runs in one shift, a larger one runs in several. Where the plan requires aging, this component is fixed and it is the one most often left out of a quoted lead time.

Component 4: the packaging print

A fixed lead time that starts when the artwork is approved, not when the order is placed.

Cartons, inserts and labels are printed per artwork version, and the print slot is booked after the proof is approved. A programme that approves artwork late shifts this component rather than shortening it, and an additional language version adds a second plate and a second slot. This is the component the buyer controls most directly, through the speed of the artwork approval.

Component 5: inspection, documents and freight

The tail of the calendar, and the one that decides the arrival date.

Final inspection, the packing list and the certification documents, the booking of the vessel or flight, the transit and customs clearance all sit here. On a long route with a weekly sailing, missing the booking by a day can cost a week, which is why this component is worth its own milestone rather than being absorbed into a general buffer.

Component Type Who controls it How to compress it
Component lead time Supply chain The factory’s purchasing Use a platform that holds stock
Production slot Queue The factory’s schedule Book the slot with the order
Test and aging Fixed duration The test plan Parallel racks or a smaller batch
Packaging print Fixed, after approval The buyer’s approval Approve the proof earlier
Inspection and freight Fixed with a queue The forwarder and the buyer Book the vessel when the order is placed

Which components the buyer controls

Three of the five, and two of them are decisions rather than waiting.

The buyer controls the artwork approval, which starts the print; the specification freeze, which starts everything else; and the freight booking, which decides the arrival date. The other two components are supply-chain and factory questions, and the buyer’s leverage there is in choosing a platform that holds stock and in booking the slot early rather than in asking for a shorter assembly time.

Keeping the calendar honest

Three habits that prevent the five-week surprise.

Ask for the five components separately rather than for one figure; ask which of them are queues and when the slot is booked; and re-derive the calendar when any component changes rather than carrying the original total forward. A programme that keeps a dated, component-level calendar can absorb a change; one that holds a single lead time figure absorbs the change at the launch date.

FAQ

Why is the quoted lead time shorter than the actual one?

Usually because it describes production only: the assembly time, with the component lead time, the slot and the freight excluded. Asking for the five components separately turns the quotation into a calendar. The quoted figure usually describes production only, with the component lead time, the slot and the freight excluded, so ask for the five components separately to turn it into a calendar.

Do platform programmes hold components in stock?

A platform in regular production usually holds the parts for it, which removes the component lead time from the order. Where a part is specific to your configuration, it is ordered against the order and its lead time becomes the first item on the calendar. How does aging affect the calendar?

It adds a duration that runs on the rack rather than on the line, so a large batch may take several rack cycles. Where the plan requires a long burn-in, it is worth knowing the rack capacity before committing to a delivery date. It adds a duration that runs on the rack rather than on the line, so a large batch may take several rack cycles.

Can the print lead time be shortened?

Not by asking; it starts when the artwork is approved. Approving the proof earlier, or reducing the number of language versions on the first run, moves the whole component. The print lead time starts when the artwork is approved, so approving the proof earlier or reducing the language versions on the first run moves the whole component of the calendar.

What should the capacity answer contain?

The line, the shift pattern, the units per shift for the configuration and the months already committed, with the date it was given. That answer is what allows the slot component of the lead time to be planned rather than hoped for. Send the configuration, the launch window and the destination to Wecent Group through the contact page. The reply returns the five lead-time components separately, the slot position with its date and the buyer’s approval milestones marked in the calendar.
