What is pass-through charging on a magnetic power bank?

Pass-through charging lets a power bank charge a phone while the power bank itself is connected to a charger. Not all power banks support it, and it generates more heat. Check the manual before using it.

What is pass-through charging on a magnetic power bank?
The question

Customers ask whether they can charge our magnetic power bank and their phone at the same time, with the phone attached. Is that pass-through charging, and is it OK?

Main answer · Wecent Editorial Team

Short answer: Yes, that’s pass-through charging: the power bank is connected to a charger while also charging a device. Some power banks support it and manage power between the phone and their own battery; others don’t, or limit it. It generates more heat because both charging processes run at once. Check the manual for the specific model. Confirm with Wecent whether the magnetic power bank supports pass-through and any limits.

How it works

With pass-through, input power from the wall charger goes to the phone and the power bank’s battery. The power bank’s controller decides how to split it. Some prioritise the phone, others the power bank.

Heat

Wireless charging of the phone produces heat in the power bank and phone. Charging the power bank’s own battery adds more. With both running, temperatures rise. Many designs limit power or pause one process when warm.

When it’s useful

  • Overnight at a hotel with one socket.
  • At a desk, so both are full in the morning.
  • Travel days with limited sockets.

When to avoid it

  • In warm environments or direct sunlight.
  • On soft surfaces or in bags.
  • If the manual says the model doesn’t support it.

Tips

  1. Use the recommended adapter.
  2. Place on a hard surface.
  3. Remove thick cases.
  4. Stop if the power bank or phone gets very hot.

Wired pass-through versus wireless

Pass-through charging with the phone attached magnetically is wireless, so it runs warmer than charging the phone with a cable from the power bank. If the power bank has a USB-C output, connecting the phone by cable during pass-through usually produces less heat and charges faster.

Speed expectations

During pass-through, the phone may charge more slowly than on a wall charger, and the power bank may take longer to fill. That’s normal; the input power is shared between two jobs.

Battery wear

Heat is the main factor in battery ageing, for both the phone and the power bank. Frequent pass-through use in warm conditions can add wear. Occasional use is fine.

Checking support

Look in the manual or specification for “pass-through charging”. If it’s not mentioned, ask the seller.

What we say in listings

Only mention pass-through if the model supports it and it’s been tested. Confirm with Wecent before including it.

Safety

Stop using a power bank that swells, gets very hot, smells or is damaged. Dispose of it as battery waste.

Where this answer says confirm with Wecent, the detail is not published on the product page and has to come from the datasheet or the factory. General facts come from the standards bodies, regulators or device makers named in the text.

Three more perspectives

Wecent Editorial Team · After-sales perspective

Customers who report a hot power bank often use pass-through overnight. Ask how it was used.

Wecent Editorial Team · Compliance/QC perspective

Pass-through claims should be supported by tests under the conditions described in the manual.

Wecent Editorial Team · Selection perspective

Pass-through is a useful feature for travellers. If supported, highlight it clearly.
