Why is my phone charging slowly, and what should I check first?

Slow charging usually comes from the cable, the adapter, the port or heat, not the phone itself. Check them in that order before assuming a fault.

Why is my phone charging slowly, and what should I check first?
The question

Slow charging is one of the most common support questions we see for charger brands. A customer says their phone takes hours and asks whether the phone, the charger or the cable is to blame. What should a support team check, and in what order?

Short answer: Check the cable, the adapter, the port and the temperature, in that order. A low-power adapter, a worn cable or a port full of lint explains most slow charging. Phones also deliberately slow down when they are warm or close to full, which is normal.

1. The adapter

A 5W or 10W adapter will charge a modern phone slowly, however good the cable is. Apple’s fast-charging guidance lists minimum adapter ratings for its iPhone models and says a comparable third-party USB-C adapter supporting USB Power Delivery can be used. If the adapter has no wattage printed on it, or only a small USB-A port, it is the most likely cause.

2. The cable

A cable that was made for data or low-power charging can limit speed. Cables that are worn, bent or damaged can also drop out or slow down. Apple’s troubleshooting advice is to check the cable and adapter for damage such as breakage or bent prongs and not to use damaged accessories. Try a known-good cable from the phone maker or a certified one.

3. The port

Lint in a charging port stops a cable from seating fully, which gives a poor connection. Apple lists removing debris from the charging port as one of its basic steps. See our separate post on cleaning a charging port safely.

4. Heat and battery level

Phones reduce charging speed when they get warm and as they approach full. Apple notes that fast charging works best in normal temperatures and may not work when it is too hot or too cold, and that the iPhone’s software may limit charging above 80 percent if the battery gets too warm. A phone in a thick case, on a sunny windowsill or running a game while charging will charge more slowly.

5. Wireless charging specifics

If the phone is on a wireless pad, remove thick or metal cases and check alignment. Apple also says the phone will charge using the USB connection if it is connected by cable at the same time as it sits on a pad.

6. Software and background use

Heavy use while charging, a very old battery or optimised charging settings can all make the percentage rise slowly. These are not charger faults.

A simple order for support teams

Try another outlet, then the known-good adapter and cable, then clean the port, then test without a case. If the phone still charges slowly with known-good parts, the issue is in the phone or its battery, and it needs the phone maker’s service.

Three more perspectives

Wecent Editorial Team · Purchasing perspective

Put the wattage on the front of the box and in the title. Many slow-charging complaints come from customers who bought a “fast charger” that was never rated high enough for their phone.

Wecent Editorial Team · After-sales perspective

Ask three questions in your first reply: what adapter, what cable, what case. Those answers solve most tickets without any returns.

Wecent Editorial Team · Compliance/QC perspective

Test charging speed with the shipped cable at the end of production, not just the charger alone. A weak cable passes visual inspection and fails in the customer’s hand.
