Can one 100W travel charger replace separate laptop and phone chargers on a trip?
Usually yes, if you understand how the power is shared.

I want to take one charger on a trip for my laptop, phone and earbuds. Will a single 100W multi-port charger do the job?
Short answer: Usually yes, if you understand how the power is shared. A 100W multi-port charger can run a laptop and a phone together, but the total is divided between ports, so the laptop may get less when other devices are connected. Check the port power split, bring cables rated for the load and add up the needs of your devices.
What 100W means
The 100W is the maximum the charger can supply in total, or on its best single port. With several ports in use, the power is shared, and each port gets less. The charger’s label or manual shows how it splits.
Work out your needs
List your devices and the power each needs. A phone often uses a modest amount, earbuds very little, a laptop considerably more. If your laptop needs 65W and your phone 20W, a 100W charger with a good split can cover both.
Check the split
- Look for a table that shows power per port when two or three ports are used.
- Check that the laptop port is the high-power one.
- Note that connecting a second device may reduce the first device’s power.
Cables
Use cables rated for the power: a high-power cable for the laptop and a standard one for the phone. A wrong cable limits speed.
Plug and travel features
- A folding plug protects the bag.
- A compact size saves space.
- Check that the plug type matches your destination, or take an adapter.
- Look for recognised safety marks.
When one charger is not enough
If you work on a laptop while charging several heavy devices, a second charger may help. If you need to charge all devices at the same time quickly, plan the total.
Benefits
Less weight, fewer cables, one socket needed in a hotel room.
Quick summary
It works if the power split suits your devices, the cables are rated correctly and the charger is a quality unit.
Test before the trip
Plug in your laptop, phone and earbuds together at home and watch the charging speeds for an hour. If the laptop charges slowly with all three connected, you know to charge in turns, or to bring a second charger. It is better to learn this in your kitchen than in a hotel at midnight.
