Should our chargers carry CE or UKCA marking for Great Britain?
The question

We sell chargers in the UK. Do we need to switch to UKCA marking or can we keep CE?

Main answer · Wecent Editorial Team

Short answer: For chargers, CE marking can continue to be used in Great Britain. The Product Safety and Metrology etc. (Amendment) Regulations 2024, in force from 1 October 2024, extended recognition of CE marking indefinitely for many product areas, including electrical equipment safety, EMC and radio equipment. Businesses can choose CE or UKCA. Northern Ireland follows EU rules, so CE applies there. UK importer details and the UK plug still apply. Check GOV.UK guidance for current details.

What changed

After the UK left the EU, UKCA marking was introduced for Great Britain, with deadlines that were extended several times. In 2023 and 2024 the government announced that recognition of CE marking would continue indefinitely for many products. The Product Safety and Metrology etc. (Amendment) Regulations 2024 put this into law from 1 October 2024.

What it means for chargers

GOV.UK guidance for the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016 and the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017 says businesses can use either UKCA or CE marking to place goods on the market in Great Britain. A charger meeting EU requirements and carrying CE can therefore be sold in GB, provided the requirements are actually met.

Northern Ireland

Under the Windsor Framework, Northern Ireland follows EU product rules, so CE marking is required there. The UKNI marking applies only in specific cases involving UK bodies.

What still applies

Chargers sold in the UK need the UK three-pin plug (BS 1363 style) and must meet UK plug and socket safety rules. Importers into GB must add their name and address. Declarations of conformity and technical documentation are still needed.

Should you still use UKCA?

Some businesses use both markings or UKCA alone for GB-only products. It’s a choice, not an obligation, for these categories. Reprinting labels just to add UKCA is usually unnecessary.

Online marketplaces

Marketplaces selling into the UK may ask for the declaration of conformity and UK importer or responsible details. Keep these documents ready for each listing, whichever marking you choose.

Keep checking

Product rules change. Check the current GOV.UK guidance for each regulation before printing labels and confirm with a compliance adviser.

Confirm with Wecent the declarations, test reports and label artwork for each UK model; this is not legal advice.

Where this answer says confirm with Wecent, the detail is not published on the product page and has to come from the datasheet or the factory. General facts come from the standards bodies, regulators or device makers named in the text.

Three more perspectives

We kept CE on GB stock and saved a label reprint. The UK importer address is the part people forget.

Wecent Editorial Team · Purchasing perspective

Separate NI and GB stock isn’t needed for marking if CE is used, which simplifies planning.
