How do we budget for packaging artwork changes across EU, UK, US and AU versions?
Plan one master design with market-specific panels for markings, addresses, languages and plug types. Budget design hours, printing plates, proofs and minimum print runs per version, plus time for compliance review.

We’re launching one charger in four markets with different plug heads. How should we budget for packaging artwork and printing?
Short answer: Build one master design and keep market-specific information in clearly defined areas: compliance marks, importer or responsible-person addresses, languages, plug type and barcodes. Budget for design hours per version, printing plates or setup per version, proofs, minimum print quantities for each box version, and a compliance review of each version before printing. Shared elements reduce cost; separate boxes for each market increase it.
What differs by market
- Marks: CE for the EU; UKCA and/or CE for Great Britain under current UK rules; FCC information for the US; RCM for Australia where applicable.
- Addresses: manufacturer, importer, or responsible person details per market.
- Languages: EU countries need their own languages for safety information.
- Plug type and photos: the pictured plug should match the contents.
- Recycling marks: e.g. the crossed-out bin for WEEE; France’s Triman and sorting information.
- Barcodes: a separate GTIN per version is usually needed.
Approaches
- Separate box per market: clearest, but most plates, proofs and minimum runs.
- Shared box plus market sticker: one print run with a label for market details; cheaper, but stickers must be durable and accurate.
- Multi-market box: combine markets that share requirements (e.g. EU + UK) on one box, with all marks and addresses.
Cost items to budget
- Design hours: master plus each version.
- Translation of safety information and instructions.
- Printing setup and plates per version.
- Physical proofs or pre-production samples.
- Minimum print quantity per version; leftovers if sales differ by market.
- Compliance review time.
Plug photos and contents
Box photos that show a US plug on a UK version confuse customers and can lead to returns or complaints of misleading packaging. Use market-specific product images or a neutral image without visible pins. Make sure the contents list matches each version, including which plug heads and cables are included.
Timing
Packaging is often the slowest part of a launch. Start artwork early, allow for at least one correction round, and freeze it before production.
Avoid reprints
Most reprints come from missing or wrong compliance information: wrong address, wrong mark, missing language. A checklist per market reviewed before approval saves much more than it costs.
Ask Wecent
- Minimum print quantities per box version.
- Whether labels can be applied in the factory.
- Artwork templates and dielines for each model.
Forecasting
Allocate packaging quantities by market forecast, with a small buffer. Over-printing one version ties up money in unusable boxes.
