Which charger fits a Nintendo Switch or handheld gaming device?
Most handhelds charge over USB-C with USB Power Delivery. For handheld charging, a quality PD charger at or above the original adapter's wattage works for most. Docked TV mode can have stricter needs, so check the console maker's guidance.

Customers ask whether our 65W and 30W chargers work with the Nintendo Switch and other handhelds like the Steam Deck. What should we say?
Short answer: For charging the handheld itself, a USB-C PD charger at or above the wattage of the device’s original adapter usually works well; the original Nintendo Switch adapter is rated 39W (15V at 2.6A), and the Steam Deck ships with a 45W adapter. Docked TV mode can be stricter: some docks need specific voltage and current, and Nintendo recommends its own adapter for the dock. A 65W PD charger with a 15V profile is a good general choice. Test with the devices before making specific compatibility claims.
Handheld charging
Handhelds negotiate power using USB PD. They accept lower-wattage chargers but charge slower, and may lose charge while playing demanding games. A charger matching the original adapter gives similar charging behaviour.
Key profiles
- 15V: used by many handhelds, including the original Switch adapter. Make sure the charger offers 15V at sufficient current.
- Total wattage: at least the original adapter’s rating; more headroom is fine.
Docked mode
Docks pass power through to the console and power the TV output. Nintendo advises using the official AC adapter with the Switch dock. Third-party chargers may work, but some don’t provide the profile the dock expects, and the dock may not output video. Check the console maker’s guidance and test before claiming dock compatibility. Newer console generations may have different requirements.
Cables
Use good USB-C to USB-C cables. For handhelds under 60W, a 3A cable is enough.
Travel
A 65W charger can charge a handheld, a phone and sometimes a laptop. Check per-port allocation when several devices are connected.
Playing while charging
Demanding games draw more power. On a lower-wattage charger, the battery may charge slowly or even drain during play. If customers play while plugged in, recommend a charger at or above the original adapter’s rating.
What to recommend
- Handheld only: a 30W–45W PD charger with 15V support.
- Handheld + phone, travel: 65W multi-port.
- Docked TV use: the console maker’s adapter, unless tested.
What we check
Before listing compatibility, test with each console and dock you intend to name. Confirm with Wecent the PD profiles per port for each model, especially 15V current.
Listing wording
“Charges USB-C handheld consoles in handheld mode” is safer than naming consoles unless tested. Use trademarks only as permitted.
Where this answer says confirm with Wecent, the detail is not published on the product page and has to come from the datasheet or the factory. General facts come from the standards bodies, regulators or device makers named in the text.
