Can a wireless charger be used under a desk surface?
Only with chargers designed for it. Standard pads and stands are designed for direct contact with the phone, typically within a few millimetres. Desk tops are usually too thick for reliable charging and may trap heat.

An office customer wants to mount our magnetic wireless chargers underneath their desks so phones charge on the surface. Will that work?
Short answer: Generally not with standard wireless chargers. Qi charging is designed for short distances between coils, typically a few millimetres including the phone case. Most desk tops are much thicker, so the phone won’t charge, or will charge unreliably. Purpose-built under-desk chargers exist with different designs and installation guidance. For standard pads, mount them on the desk surface or use built-in desk grommet chargers designed for that purpose.
Why distance matters
Wireless charging uses magnetic coupling between a coil in the charger and a coil in the phone. Coupling drops quickly with distance. Standard chargers are designed for contact with the phone, allowing for a thin case. A typical desk top of 18–25 mm is far beyond what they are designed for.
What happens if you try
- The phone doesn’t detect the charger, or charges intermittently.
- Charging is slow and the charger works harder, producing more heat.
- Foreign object detection may trigger due to unusual readings.
- Heat can build up in a space under the desk with little airflow.
Magnetic chargers
Magnetic alignment also fails through a thick desk. The magnet ring can’t hold or align the phone at that distance.
Alternatives
- Surface-mounted pads: fixed with adhesive or a bracket on the desk top.
- Grommet-mounted chargers: designed to sit in a hole in the desk with the charging surface flush.
- Purpose-built under-desk chargers: designed and specified for a given desk thickness, following the maker’s installation instructions.
- Cable charging: a desk-mounted USB-C outlet is reliable and fast.
Our products
Wecent’s magnetic and wireless pads are designed for direct contact use. We don’t have data on through-surface use; confirm with Wecent before offering any under-desk installation.
If a customer has already installed under-desk
Ask them to remove the chargers and test on the desk surface. If they work normally there, the distance was the cause.
Safety note
Don’t enclose chargers in tight spaces without ventilation, and don’t stick metal plates or brackets between charger and phone. Metal in the field can heat up.
Planning advice for offices
Discuss the desk material and thickness with the furniture supplier before choosing a solution. Test a few desks before rolling out across the office.
Where this answer says confirm with Wecent, the detail is not published on the product page and has to come from the datasheet or the factory. General facts come from the standards bodies, regulators or device makers named in the text.
