Why does a phone stop fast charging halfway through?

Usually by design. Phones taper charging as the battery fills and slow down when warm. A drop at around 50–80% is normal for most phones.

Why does a phone stop fast charging halfway through?
The question

Customers report that their phone fast-charges at first, then slows a lot around halfway. They think our charger is faulty. Is it?

Main answer · Wecent Editorial Team

Short answer: Almost certainly not. Lithium-ion batteries charge fastest when nearly empty, and phones deliberately reduce charging power as the battery fills, often noticeably after around 50% to 80%. Heat makes phones slow down earlier. That’s why phone makers quote fast-charging times like “up to 50% in about 30 minutes”, not times to 100%.

How phones charge

Charging typically starts with a high-power phase and then shifts to a tapering phase where the current falls as the battery approaches full. The phone controls this, not the charger. Apple’s support pages, for example, describe fast-charge times to around 50% and say charging time varies with conditions. Other phone makers describe similar behaviour.

Why it slows earlier on some days

  • Heat: a warm phone limits charging, especially in a case, in the sun or while in use.
  • Use during charging: gaming or navigation adds heat and consumes some of the power.
  • Battery-care features: optimised or adaptive charging can hold the charge level and finish later.
  • Power sharing: another device plugged into the same charger reduces the phone’s share.
  • Battery age: older batteries may charge differently.

What the charger contributes

The charger only offers power profiles; the phone decides which one to use and when to step down. A higher-wattage charger can shorten the fast phase a little for phones that accept more power, but it can’t change the tapering near full. That’s why the same slow-down appears with the phone maker’s own charger too.

When it might be the charger or cable

Be suspicious if charging slows or stops at a low battery level, if the phone switches between charging and not charging, or if the charger and cable get unusually hot. Then try another cable and charger to isolate the cause.

What to tell customers

  1. “Fast charging is strongest from low battery and slows as the battery fills. This protects the battery.”
  2. “Keep the phone cool while charging; remove thick cases if it gets warm.”
  3. “Check whether your phone’s battery-care setting is holding the charge.”

On the listing

Avoid “full charge in X minutes” unless you have tested that with the device. Use the device maker’s wording, such as “up to 50% in about 30 minutes with a compatible phone”, and name the source.

Where this answer says confirm with Wecent, the detail is not published on the product page and has to come from the datasheet or the factory. General facts come from the standards bodies, regulators or device makers named in the text.

Three more perspectives

Wecent Editorial Team · Purchasing perspective

Ask the content team to remove any charging-time claim from listings that hasn’t been tested. Charging times are among the most common reasons for “not as described” returns.

Wecent Editorial Team · Compliance/QC perspective

If you publish charging times, keep the test conditions on file: phone model, software version, starting charge, ambient temperature and cable. Without those, you can’t defend the claim.

A small graphic showing a fast first half and slower second half, in a help article, explains this better than text. Link it in replies to “stops fast charging” tickets.
