What should a road-trip charging kit contain for a family of four?
Pack a multi-port car charger with enough power for your devices, a cable for each device plus spares, one or two power banks, and a small organiser to keep it all tidy.

We are driving for a week with four people and a mix of phones and tablets. What chargers and cables should we pack?
Short answer: Pack a multi-port car charger with enough power for your devices, a cable for each device plus spares, one or two power banks, and a small organiser to keep it all tidy. Count devices first, check their connector types and keep everything easy to reach, not buried in the boot.
Start with a device list
Write down every device that needs charging: phones, tablets, handheld games, headphones, a camera. Note the connector type of each, such as USB-C or Lightning, and whether it supports fast charging.
Car charging
- A multi-port car charger. Choose one with enough total power for your devices. Two or more USB-C ports are useful. A single high-power port is handy for a tablet or laptop.
- A second charger. If the car has two sockets, consider two chargers so that passengers in the back can charge too.
- Cables. One per device, plus two spares. Short cables for the front, longer ones for the back seats.
Power banks
A power bank is useful for stops, hikes and when the car is off. One or two mid-sized banks cover a family on a week-long trip. Charge them before leaving, and do not leave them in hot cars.
Home-charging at overnight stops
Take a compact wall charger with several ports so that the whole family can charge at the hotel from a single socket. Check that it has enough total power.
Organise it
- Use a small pouch for each person, or one labelled pouch for the kit.
- Keep cables coiled and tied.
- Store the car charger in the glovebox or a seat pocket.
- Pack spare cables in a separate bag so one loss does not cost everything.
Safety in the car
- Do not leave devices charging on the seat in direct sun.
- Do not use damaged cables or chargers.
- Keep cables clear of the driver’s feet and controls.
- Avoid cheap, unmarked car chargers.
- Switch off the charger socket or unplug when the car is parked for long.
Quick checklist
Chargers for car and hotel, cables for every device, two spares, one or two power banks, a pouch and a printed list of what is in the kit.
