What should a traveller do if a charger gets wet?
The question

My charger got soaked in my bag, or a drink spilled on it at a cafe. Can I dry it and use it, or should I throw it away?

Main answer · Wecent Editorial Team

Short answer: Do not use it while wet. If it is plugged in, switch off the power or unplug it carefully, only if dry hands and a dry surface make that safe. Dry the charger thoroughly for a long time, and replace it if it was soaked, sat in salt water or shows corrosion or damage. A cheap replacement is better than a risk of shock or fire.

First steps

  1. If it is plugged in and you can switch off the power at the wall safely, do so. Otherwise take care and do not touch wet parts with wet hands.
  2. Unplug the charger from the wall and the device.
  3. Wipe off the outside.
  4. Keep it away from heat sources like hair dryers and radiators.

Drying

Leave the charger and cable in a dry, warm, airy place for a long time, such as a few days, so moisture can leave the case. Do not use rice as a rule, since it is not reliable. Do not use the charger until you are sure it is dry.

When to replace it

  • It was soaked, submerged or sat in water for some time.
  • It was exposed to salt water, soda, juice or coffee.
  • You see corrosion, white deposits or rust.
  • You hear rattling or smell something odd.
  • The case is cracked.
  • It sparks, buzzes or trips the power when plugged in.

What to check on a cable

A wet cable can corrode at the connector. Dry it and inspect it for rust or green spots. If in doubt, replace it.

Do not take chances

Mains electricity and water are a dangerous mix. A cheap charger replacement is better than an injury, so do not risk it.

Travel tip

Keep chargers in a waterproof pouch, especially near drinks, and in humid climates.

For brands

Explain what to do after a spill in the manual and warn that chargers are not water-resistant unless stated.

Quick summary

Unplug safely, do not use while wet, dry fully and replace if soaked, salt-exposed or corroded.

Preparing for the next time

Carry a spare cable and a small power bank, so that a ruined charger does not leave you without power. Pack chargers in a sealable pouch, away from water bottles. If you travel to wet climates, a small waterproof bag costs very little and protects your equipment, passport and phone together.

Three more perspectives

Wecent Editorial Team · Use perspective

When in doubt, replace the charger. It costs less than the risk.

Wecent Editorial Team · After-sales perspective

Ask customers whether the charger was plugged in during the spill and whether it works. Record water-damage returns separately.

Do not describe the product as splash-proof unless tested and rated for it.
