Travel Charger
A travel charger is only half the question — the other half is the plug. Here is how a travel charger differs from a travel adapter and a power bank, how plug kits change the SKU count, and what a travel programme costs to specify.
A travel charger converts mains power for your devices; a travel adapter changes the plug shape, and often does nothing to the voltage. A power bank stores energy for use away from a socket. Most travel kits need two of the three, and the plug kit — not the wattage — is what decides how many SKUs a programme needs.

Travel charger, travel adapter or power bank — the difference matters
The three products get sold as if they were interchangeable and they do different jobs. A travel charger takes mains power and delivers the rate a device negotiates over USB-C — it is what actually charges a laptop or a phone from a wall socket. A travel adapter changes the shape of the plug, and many adapters pass the mains voltage straight through. A power bank stores energy so a device can charge with no socket at all.
That distinction decides what a programme has to include. An adapter without a charger charges nothing; a charger with a fixed plug only works in one country; a power bank solves the wrong problem if the traveller’s issue is a laptop that needs 65W for two hours.
- Charger. Converts mains power to what the device negotiates — the part that does the charging.
- Adapter. Changes the plug shape. Often passive, so it does not raise the rate or convert voltage.
- Plug kit. Interchangeable pins on the charger itself, which collapses several markets into one SKU.
What a travel programme should actually contain
The band follows the devices in the bag. A phone-only traveller is served by 20W to 45W; a laptop adds the 65W to 100W band, which is where GaN matters because the housing has to stay pocket-sized. The plug decision is separate and often more consequential: one SKU with a plug kit, or several fixed-plug SKUs per market.
| Traveller | Charger to carry | Plug strategy |
|---|---|---|
| Phone and earbuds | 20W to 45W GaN, single or 1A1C port | One SKU with an EU/UK/US/AUS kit |
| Laptop and phone | 65W to 100W GaN, 1A1C or 2C | One SKU with a kit, or per-market fixed plugs |
| No socket available | Power bank as well — a separate product with its own rules | Not applicable |
| Bedside charging abroad | Folding wireless travel unit | Adapter supplied with the unit |
The wired side lives on travel GaN adapters and the wireless equivalent on the travel wireless charger page.

What you can change on a travel charger
Everything below is applied on top of a platform that already holds its reports, which keeps the sample at 2–3 days and the MOQ at 200 pcs per model.
- Band and ports — 40W, 45W, 65W or 100W, with single or 1A1C layouts.
- Plug kit — EU / UK / US / AUS interchangeable pins, or a fixed plug for a domestic programme.
- Bundle — cable, pouch or travel case quoted with the unit so the set ships retail-ready.
- Shell, logo and packaging — custom colour and finish, printing, and a box drawn to your artwork.

How a travel charger is built and checked
Travel SKUs are checked against the markets they ship to as well as the specification, because the plug kit and the marking are part of what the product is.
Material preparation and checking
The GaN switches, transformer, capacitors, the plug kit parts and the pouch are checked against the approved bill of materials before a travel charger reaches the line.
First-piece quality confirmation
The first unit of a run is built and load-tested with the plug kit it will ship with, because the kit is part of the configuration rather than an accessory.
Assembly on static-protected lines
Boards are assembled on static-protected lines to a written operation sheet, with the interchangeable pins fitted and checked at their own station.
Visual inspection rounds
Repeat inspections verify solder joints, pin fit and retention, marking legibility, shell finish and the condition of the pouch where one is supplied.
Aging under load and electrical testing
Every unit runs an aging cycle under load and is re-measured afterwards, which is where a compact housing that only holds its rate briefly is caught.
Charging and protocol verification
Output voltage and current are measured across the port, including PPS ranges, with handshake checks for PD, QC, AFC, FCP, Apple 2.4A and BC1.2.
QA sampling, packing and shipment inspection
Sampling runs before packing, the plug kit, marking and travel box are checked against the approved artwork for each destination market.
A travel programme usually spans two or three plug configurations; the electrical platform and the inspection route stay identical across them.
Where a travel charger gets specified
Travel retail
Airport and travel-retail shelves where one SKU has to serve several plug standards.
In-box accessory
Supplied with a laptop or travel device, with the plug kit matched to the launch markets.
Corporate gifting
A plug kit and a pouch turn the charger into a set that reads as a gift rather than a spare.
Airline and hotel programmes
Amenity kits built around one charger that works on the guest’s own socket.
Certifications and what comes with the shipment
The file for a travel charger is assembled from the first sample rather than hunted down before dispatch, so the paperwork matches the market the container is going to.
CE / UKCA
European Union and United Kingdom market access for the finished unit and its power supply.
FCC
United States electromagnetic compliance for the finished unit.
RoHS / REACH
Restricted-substance documentation for the European market.
PSE / KC
Japan and Korea market documentation, quoted with the plug kit.
CB / SAA / GS / ETL
Additional reports quoted where the channel or retailer requires them.

Travel charger — FAQs
What is the difference between a travel adapter and a travel charger?
The adapter changes the shape of the plug; the charger does the converting. Many adapters are passive, so they make a device fit the socket without changing the voltage or the charging rate. A travel charger with a plug kit does both jobs in one unit, which is why it is usually the better product to carry.
Does TSA allow portable phone chargers?
A charger or plug adapter travels as ordinary electronics with no special restriction. The item with rules is a power bank: those must go in the cabin rather than checked luggage and are subject to capacity limits expressed in watt-hours, so the airline or the local authority is the place to confirm the limit for a specific trip.
What is the best travel charger?
The band that matches the devices in the bag. A phone-only traveller needs 20W to 45W; anyone carrying a laptop needs the 65W to 100W band. After that it is the plug kit that decides whether one SKU covers the trip or the customer also needs an adapter.
Will one charger work in Europe, the UK, the US and Australia?
Yes, with an interchangeable plug kit. The charger itself takes a universal AC input, and the plug kit supplies the pins for each destination — which collapses four markets into one SKU instead of four regional versions.
Do I still need an adapter with a plug kit?
No. The plug kit replaces the travel adapter for the charger itself. Travellers still need an adapter for devices whose own plug is fixed, which is why some hotel and travel programmes bundle a small adapter alongside the charger.
Can a travel charger charge a laptop?
From the 65W band upwards, yes — most thin-and-light laptops negotiate their rate over USB-C Power Delivery inside that band, and 100W adds headroom for heavier machines.
What is the minimum order?
200 pcs per model, and a trial quantity can be split across two plug kits or two wattages, so the first order tests the market rather than a single configuration.
How fast are samples and production?
Samples ship in 2–3 days with your logo and finish applied; mass production runs 7–15 days after sample and artwork approval.
Which certifications apply to a travel charger?
CE, RoHS, FCC, UKCA, PSE, KC, SAA and CB reports depending on the destinations, with ErP efficiency documentation for the external power supply. Because a travel SKU usually ships to several markets, the file is assembled per destination from the first sample.
What happens if units fail in the field?
The platform carries a 2-year warranty with a 24-hour complaint response and batch traceability, so a claim comes back as a batch report and a corrective action rather than only a replacement.
Travel chargers in more detail — plug kits, packing and what people actually carry Know more Know less
The plug kit decision, in numbers
A fixed plug means one SKU per market: four markets, four lines to forecast, stock and label. An interchangeable kit means one SKU serving all four, at a slightly higher unit cost and a slightly larger box.
The arithmetic usually favours the kit once three or more markets are involved, because the saving is not on the unit price but on the number of SKUs a distributor has to hold and the number of label versions a factory has to manage.
What travellers actually carry
Most travel kits end up containing a charger, a cable and sometimes a small adapter for devices with fixed plugs. The charger is the part that decides whether the laptop works; the adapter is the part that decides whether the charger fits the wall.
That is why travel programmes are usually specified from the device list backwards — laptop or phone only, one device or several — rather than from the wattage upwards.
Power banks are a different product with different rules
A power bank stores energy rather than converting it, and it brings its own requirements: cell documentation, shipping classification and the cabin-only rule for air travel. We build one magnetic Qi2 power bank, and it is specified as a travel product in its own right rather than as an accessory to a charger.
If a channel asks for a “travel charger” and means a power bank, the quotation changes substantially — which is worth settling before the artwork is drawn.
