Qi certification is not a certificate that arrives and sits in a folder. It is a programme attached to a product revision, and the document that proves it names a configuration rather than a product family. That distinction explains most of the confusion brands meet when a marketplace, a distributor or a customs officer asks for the paperwork on a wireless charger.
Qi certification: what the programme actually covers
The programme covers interoperability: a wireless power transmitter or receiver that is tested against the standard and listed.
The formal rules are published by the Wireless Power Consortium, and they cover the power profiles a product implements, the interoperability tests it passes and the compliance requirements attached to using the Qi mark. Certification applies to the product configuration that was tested, and the mark may only be used on products that conform to it.
What the programme does not cover is equally important. It does not replace the safety approval for the product, it does not cover the mains adapter as a separate item, and it does not authorise electromagnetic behaviour outside the standard’s own scope. Those belong to the regional approvals, which is why a wireless charger programme usually carries both a Qi file and a safety and EMC file.
Who the certification applies to, and who signs for it
The applicant is a company, and the product that is tested is a specific configuration.
A factory can hold the listing for a platform it builds, and a brand can hold a listing for a configuration it owns. Where a brand sells a platform product under its own name, the practical questions are which company appears in the file and whether the tested configuration still matches what is being shipped. A new enclosure, a different coil or an additional charging surface changes the configuration, and that change is assessed against the tested product rather than assumed to be covered.
The tests a Qi submission runs
The submission tests the interaction between the transmitter and the receiver as well as the product on its own.
Power transfer behaviour, alignment behaviour where a magnetic reference is used, foreign object handling, thermal behaviour under load and the control communication between the two sides. The tests are run in the configuration the brand ships, including the enclosure that carries the coil, because the housing forms part of the thermal and mechanical arrangement being evaluated.
The documents that make up the file
The file is a set of documents, and each one answers a different question.
The listing or certificate identifying the product and the profile, the test report showing the tests that were run and their results, the technical documentation describing the construction, and the declaration covering the marking. For a brand assembling its own compliance pack, those documents sit next to the safety and EMC reports for the same revision, and the revision number has to agree across all of them.
| Stage | What happens | Evidence produced | Depends on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Configuration fixed | Enclosure, coil and profile are frozen | Mechanical and electrical revision | The brand’s specification |
| Pre-check | Power transfer and thermal behaviour measured | Internal measurements and limits | A representative build |
| Submission | Interoperability and compliance tests | Test report | The tested configuration |
| Listing | The product appears in the programme | Listing or certificate | A passing report |
| Marking | The mark is applied within the rules | Declaration and artwork | The listing |

Where Qi sits next to safety and EMC approvals
Three files, one product, and they have to describe the same revision.
The wireless programme handles interoperability; the safety approval covers the product’s electrical construction; the electromagnetic file covers emissions and immunity. A wireless charger with a mains adapter often carries those requirements across two products, the charger and the adapter, which is why the accessory specification belongs in the brand’s file rather than only in the factory’s. Where any of the three files describes a different revision, the pack is inconsistent and a marketplace review will find it.

Four misinterpretations worth clearing up early
Four beliefs cause most of the avoidable delay on this file.
That the certification covers every product built on the same platform; that the factory’s listing automatically authorises a different brand to apply the mark; that the certification is permanent regardless of component changes; and that the wireless file can stand in for the safety and EMC approvals. Each of the four is a misunderstanding of scope rather than of quality, and each is settled by reading the document’s own scope statement.
What to verify before relying on an existing listing
A listing is a document with a scope, and the scope is what the brand has to check. The model designation, the coil arrangement, the power class and the holder are the four fields that decide whether the brand’s product is covered or merely similar to something that is.
The verification takes an afternoon and prevents a listing that cannot be used. Where the enclosure has changed since the listed build, or the coil supplier has changed, the four fields are compared rather than assumed.
Ask for the documents describing the configuration being shipped rather than the family: the certificate with its scope, the report for that build, and the revision number that both refer to.
FAQ
Is Qi certification mandatory to sell a wireless charger?
The mark may only be used by products that hold it, so using the mark without the certification is not an option. A product that does not claim the mark still has to meet the safety and electromagnetic requirements of the market it is sold in. Where the mark is intended for the packaging or the listing, the certification becomes a commercial requirement rather than a legal one, and the product still has to meet the safety and electromagnetic rules of each market independently.
How long does the process take?
It depends on whether the platform already holds a listing and how far the brand’s configuration departs from it. A configuration covered by an existing listing is a documentation exercise; a new coil arrangement needs testing, and testing can only start on a representative build. Add the build schedule, because testing can only begin on a representative unit, and a programme that starts the test after the pilot run adds that waiting time directly to the launch date.
Does the certification cover my brand if the factory already has it?
The listing names a product configuration and a holder. Where the brand appears as the responsible party on the finished product, the file has to reflect that, and the mark may only be applied where the configuration and the holder are consistent with the listing. Ask which party is named as the holder and whether the brand appears as the responsible party on the product, because those are the two facts a marketplace or a customs review will compare.
What happens if the enclosure or the coil changes later?
The change is assessed against the tested configuration. A different coil arrangement or a housing that moves the thermal result is a new configuration and needs to be evaluated rather than assumed covered by the earlier listing. The test question is whether the change moves the coil relative to the device or alters the power transfer, and the answer decides between an assessment and a new test series.
What should a brand request before placing an order?
The listing or certificate with its scope, the test report for the configuration being shipped, and the revision number that both documents describe. Ask for the same three items for the safety and EMC files, because the pack is only usable when all of them match. Match the revision numbers across the three documents as well, because a certificate describing a different revision from the label on the unit is the discrepancy that stops a review.

Send the product configuration, the markets and the platform you are considering to Wecent Group through the contact page. The reply states which listing covers the configuration, what testing the brand’s version would need and which documents would travel with the file.
