ODM Charger Factory: OEM and Private-Label Options Explained

A branded charger can open at 200 pieces per model on an ODM platform, and that number is the reason the model exists: the tooling and the safety-critical design already belong to the factory. The decisions that follow are about what the brand may change, what it may claim, and what protects the specification across repeat orders – none of which is settled by the opening quantity.

This guide is part of our OEM & ODM Charger Programmes. Read the full topic guide for the decisions that come before and after this step.

ODM charger factory: the five decisions that define the relationship

Five decisions define what an ODM relationship can deliver.

Which platform, what may change within it, whether exclusivity is available, what the price includes, and how the specification is protected across orders. Each one is commercial rather than technical, and each one is easier to settle before the first invoice than afterwards.

The reason they matter is that an ODM relationship is a delegation of design control. The brand keeps the customer relationship, the branding and the market decision; the factory keeps the design, the tooling and the component choices. Where that division is not written down, the brand discovers the boundary at the first change request, which is the most expensive time to learn it.

Decision 1: which platform, and how many tiers it covers

Ask for the platform list with the wattage tier, port layout, plug options and certification status of each.

A platform that spans several tiers lets a brand extend its range without new tooling, which is the main commercial advantage of the ODM route. A long catalogue of near-identical models is less useful, because each addition still consumes artwork, a sample and a line in the forecast. Ask which platforms are shared and which are exclusive.

Decision Question to ask Why it matters
Platform Which tiers, ports and markets does it cover? Range extension and certification path
Change scope Which finishes and labels are available? Whether the brand’s identity can be reproduced
Exclusivity Is it available by market and volume? Whether the product is unique to the brand
Price scope What does the quotation include? Comparability with other offers
Change control How are component changes notified? Specification stability across orders

Decision 2: what may change inside the platform

Colour, finish, label, packaging and accessories can usually change; the electrical design and the enclosure generally cannot.

Ask the factory to list the available options rather than to price a specification it has not built, because a platform’s finish range is limited by its tooling and moulding process. Where the brand needs a texture or a colour outside that range, the programme leaves the ODM model and becomes a tooling project.

Decision 3: exclusivity and its limits

Exclusivity is a commercial agreement, not a feature of the model.

Some factories offer market exclusivity on a platform in exchange for volume commitments; others do not offer it at all. Ask for the terms in writing, with a territory and a period, and ask what happens if the volume commitment is not met. Where exclusivity is essential to the brand’s positioning, that requirement should be settled before the packaging artwork is developed.

Decision 4: what the price includes

ODM offers differ less in the product than in what the quotation covers.

Ask whether the price includes the packaging print plates, the accessories, the certification documentation and the freight terms, and ask how the tooling position is handled. A quotation that appears cheaper because it excludes the packaging setup is not a cheaper programme; it is a narrower one, and the missing items appear later as separate costs.

Decision 5: change control and the repeat order

Because the brand does not own the design, protection comes from documents.

The specification, the approved sample and the change-notification process are the three artefacts that keep an ODM product stable. Ask which components are treated as critical, who approves an alternate and how the customer is informed. Then ask what the second order will be priced against, and keep the answer with the purchase order.

When ODM is the wrong answer

ODM is the wrong answer when the brand’s product depends on a form no platform provides, when exclusivity is non-negotiable and unavailable, or when the volume is high enough that tooling would pay back within a reasonable period.

In those cases the programme belongs in private label or OEM, with a specification the brand controls and a tooling position it owns. Recognising the switch early is cheaper than attempting to achieve the same outcome through a series of change requests on a shared platform.

Where the three models sit commercially

The three models differ in who owns the design and who carries the tooling. An ODM platform is the factory’s design offered in defined configurations, a private label order applies the brand to an existing platform, and an OEM programme starts from the brand’s specification.

The commercial consequence follows the tooling. ODM opens at the platform’s smallest production quantity, private label adds the packaging print, and OEM adds the die, the sample cycle and the validation work.

The second consequence is the schedule. ODM ships from existing production, private label adds a print slot, and OEM adds a development programme measured in months.

Choosing between them is therefore a question about the volume, the timeline and how much of the design the brand intends to own rather than about the unit price.

FAQ

“ODM means we can specify whatever we want.”

It means the opposite: the platform is the factory’s design, offered in defined configurations. A specification outside those configurations moves the programme to private label or OEM, with the tooling and minimum that implies. A specification outside those configurations moves the programme to private label or OEM, with the tooling and the minimum order that follows. Ask which configurations the platform is offered in before writing the specification.

“Exclusivity comes with a branded order.”

It does not. Exclusivity is negotiated separately, usually against volume or a territory commitment, and should be documented with a period and conditions. Exclusivity is negotiated separately, usually against a volume or a territory commitment, and it is documented with a period and conditions rather than assumed with the order. Ask for the period, the territory and the volume threshold in writing.

“We can compare unit prices directly.”

Only if the quotations cover the same scope. Check the packaging setup, the accessories, the certification documentation and the Incoterm before comparing the numbers. Check the packaging set-up, the accessories, the certification documentation and the Incoterm before comparing the numbers, because those four move the landed cost. Compare on the landed cost rather than the ex-works price, and state the term on each quotation.
