A branded GaN charger programme can open at 200 pieces per model, provided the platform, the assembly fixtures and the radio documentation already exist. That number is the practical difference between a programme that ships in weeks and one that spends a quarter in tooling loops – and it is decided by four specification choices made before the first purchase order, not by the size of the order.

This guide is part of our GaN Charger Technology. Read the full topic guide for the decisions that come before and after this step.

GaN charger production in China: the four decisions that set the schedule

Four decisions shape the calendar. Four decisions set the tooling, the test scope and the calendar.

The platform and topology, the assembly fixtures that position the sensitive parts, the test scope applied to every unit, and the batch records that tie a shipment to its production conditions. Each one can be answered with evidence before the order, and each one determines what happens when something goes wrong at volume.

The reason these four matter more in GaN than in a conventional design is thermal margin. A GaN stage runs at higher switching frequencies with less headroom, so process variation that would be absorbed in a silicon design shows up as a temperature difference or an efficiency difference. Assembly positioning, thermal interface control and a defined aging profile are therefore not quality theatre; they are the controls that protect the design.

Decision 1: platform and topology

Ask which platform the quotation is built on before discussing price.

The platform determines the topology, the controller family, the port layouts already characterised and the markets already covered by reports. A platform that spans several wattage tiers lets a brand extend its range without a new development cycle, which is the main commercial argument for opening on it. A new power stage restarts tooling, sampling and the test programme, and the schedule moves from production slots to trial loops.

Decision Evidence to request What it decides
Platform and topology Platform name, controller family, certified markets Tooling, MOQ and certification path
Assembly control Fixtures, placement tolerance, thermal interface process Whether the design survives production
Test scope Functional test definition and aging profile What reaches the customer
Batch records Traceability demonstration on a real carton Containment scope if a defect appears

Decision 2: assembly fixtures and thermal interface control

GaN assemblies are position-sensitive, so the process needs fixtures rather than operator skill.

The parts that matter are the thermal interface between the switching devices and the heat path, the placement of the magnetics, and the mechanical fit of the shield and enclosure. Ask what fixture holds each of those in position, how the interface material is applied and cured, and how the result is verified. A fixture that exists in the work instruction but not on the line is a plan rather than a control.

Decision 3: the test scope applied to every unit

The functional test should verify the negotiated profiles, and aging should follow a defined profile rather than a generic burn-in.

Ask what the functional test covers, whether it uses a real device or a fixed load, and how the result is recorded. Then ask for the aging conditions: load, duration and ambient temperature. Because GaN designs have less thermal headroom, the aging record is the evidence that the product was exercised under conditions close to real use rather than merely switched on.

Decision 4: batch records and traceability

Ask the factory to trace a finished carton back to its batch, component lots and test data.

In a functioning system this takes minutes. The record set is what defines the scope of a containment action if a defect appears, and it is also what allows a complaint to be investigated against the test data for the units that shipped. Where records exist but cannot be linked, the practical choice in a defect investigation is a whole-period recall or no action at all – neither of which is acceptable at volume.

Certification and market coverage

Certification is model and market specific, and GaN products face the same frameworks as conventional designs.

Wecent Group prepares certification groundwork for CE, FCC, RoHS, PSE and KC and confirms the current status per model. Ask which reports exist, whether they name the platform being quoted, and what a change to the enclosure, the shield or the power stage would require. A report for a sibling model does not describe the product you are buying.

Capacity, lead time and the production calendar

Capacity is allocated in blocks, and GaN lines are planned around fixtures and test stations rather than around benches alone.

Ask how many assembly and test positions the factory runs, what the daily output is with the test applied to every unit, and which milestone converts an enquiry into planned production. Samples with branding are typically prepared in two to three days where the platform allows, and quotations are returned within 24 hours on business days. Production slots fill ahead of retail build seasons, so the launch date should be planned backwards from the shipment date with a buffer.

Commercial terms to fix before ordering

State the platform, the port layout, the plug strategy, the markets, the quantity and the Incoterm in one document, and ask the supplier to restate them in the quotation.

The quotation should separate tooling from the unit price, state the MOQ and the lead time from order confirmation, and list the certification scope. Where any of those is missing, the price is an assumption rather than an offer, and the comparison with another supplier is not valid.

FAQ

What is the minimum order for a branded GaN charger?

From 200 pieces per model on an existing platform, with logo, colour, label and packaging applied. A new enclosure or power stage carries tooling and a higher economic minimum. From 200 pieces per model on an existing platform with logo, colour, label and packaging applied, while a new enclosure or power stage carries tooling and a higher economic minimum. Ask which line sets the minimum quantity.

Can a GaN platform keep its certification when we brand it?

Where the electrical design and safety-critical parts are unchanged, the branded version is covered by the existing reports with an updated label and technical file. Where the electrical design and safety-critical parts are unchanged the branded version is covered by the existing reports, with an updated label and technical file to match the brand. Ask for the file that carries the brand name.

What should we ask about the aging step?

The load, the duration and the ambient temperature, and whether the units are linked to the aging record. Without a defined profile, the step does not reproduce the conditions that reveal marginal assemblies. Ask for the load, the duration and the ambient temperature, and whether the units are linked to the aging record, because without a defined profile the step reveals nothing.

How do we confirm traceability?

Pick a finished carton and ask the factory to trace it back to its batch, component lots and test data. If that cannot be done on the spot, the record system is not linked. Pick a finished carton and ask the factory to trace it back to its batch, component lots and test data, because a system that cannot do that on the spot is not linked.
